INFORMATION ON FOUR PAGES:

This section of the web site has been revised. There are now several pages containing the following information about our therapy:

1. An overview of the training course is shown below. We suggest you read this introduction page first. Later pages cover the following topics:

2. You can read a summary of the syllabus for the various stages leading to qualification as a practitioner in Details of the training course

3. Courses are held in several UK locations throughout the year. See the timetable here

4. There is also a page containing a brief profile of the tutors who run the training programme.

TRAINING FOR A CAREER IN HEALTH KINESIOLOGY

We welcome new trainees to our profession because there is a need for more Qualified Practitioners in many parts of the country. We especially welcome those who are motivated by the wish to help others recover their health, and who also want to run their own business. Many of our practitioners find it convenient to run their practice from home, particularly if they are only working part-time.

HK is a professional training programme and you will be required to complete case studies and further home study as part of your training. Training courses are held in various regions within UK – see details under ‘Training Programme’ below, and also click on the button at the side marked ‘Training Courses’.

Most HK students find that their own health improves as a result of the corrections they experience during the training, and once qualified they find that the rewards from helping others are really worthwhile.

WHO TAKES THESE CLASSES AND WHY?

Health Kinesiology training attracts a wide variety of students:

Many of the people who become practitioners first came to HK as clients looking for solutions to their own health problems
Practitioners of other complementary and alternative therapies
Practitioners of other Kinesiologies
Some with a medical background
Many who have never done anything like this before

Their reasons for doing HK vary as much as their backgrounds do:

To become a professional Health Kinesiology Practitioner
To improve their own health
To be able to work on their family and friends
To add another skill to their current therapy practice
And last, but not least, curiosity

Some people begin studying simply with the aim of working on family and friends, but find themselves so drawn to the work that they continue on to become fully qualified HK practitioners. They may choose to leave their previous occupation, or may simply work at HK part-time.

Some students find that their interests are satisfied after only a few of the stages of training, and there is no compulsion to complete the whole training programme. In any case, all the stages can be taken at a pace to suit the individual student’s needs and pocket.

TRAINING PROGRAMME

Health Kinesiology Studies is one of the most respected professional Kinesiology training programmes. Stages 1 to 5 are offered under the Open College Network accredited programme, and completion of this will give you 10 credits towards the Kinesiology Federation’s requirements for professional membership.

The five study stages provide all the essential skills needed by a Health Kinesiology Practitioner:

Techniques of accurate muscle testing
Mastery of clear and logical thinking
Development of precise questioning techniques
Organisation of client sessions
Understanding and competence in a comprehensive and powerful range of techniques for healing and wellbeing.

Each of the five stages lasts 4 days (30 hours of tutor directed learning), and must be taken in sequence. A comprehensive manual is provided for each stage. All stages involve a balanced combination of systematic instruction, demonstration and hands-on practice in an informal, supportive environment.

Between each stage, the student will be required to do approximately 30 hours of home study and practice. Following this, the tutor will assess their theoretical and practical learning, and their case histories, before proceeding to the next stage.

Final assessment is made during one additional day, approximately 3 months after the final stage. After this you will be able to practice as an HK Registered Practitioner.

This modular system enables students to proceed at their own pace through the stages, and to study with different teachers each time, if they wish. If necessary, stages can be repeated at reduced cost until the student feels totally confident to proceed to the next stage.

The Open College Network provide an external moderator who ensures that the teaching and assessment meet the required standard, and who issues the graduating students with a formal record of credits gained. Qualified HK Practitioners are required to up-date their skills at least every 2 years, and advanced HK stages 6 – 13 are available.

Once qualified, the practitioners are required to have:

A telephone answering machine, or answering service
A therapy couch
Appropriate insurance (Kinesiology Federation have a block scheme)

Practitioners are encouraged to belong to a professional body such as the Kinesiology Federation. In order to join as a KF Associate, they will need to pass the assessment for the KF Foundation Course of Touch For Health.

To become a Kinesiology Federation Registered Professional (KFRP) it is necessary to complete courses in the core subjects of Anatomy & Physiology, Nutrition, Counselling Skills and the business skills needed to manage a practice. These core subjects must be completed within 2 years of becoming a KF Associate.

ASSESSED WORK

HOMEWORK

After each stage from 1-4, students who wish to be assessed carry out the following assessed homework:

Minimum of 15 hours of theoretical work on a minimum of 6 people
Study the manual and read recommended books.
Keep a learning journal describing their experiences, difficulties and successes. Also keeping track of hours spent reading.
Describe work done on self.
Create and maintain a personal resource manual.
Minimum of 15 hours practice
Take full case histories of new clients.
Practice sessions written up using HK notation.
Provide feedback forms for their clients to send direct to the teacher.
Write their own feedback forms assessing their work.

FINAL ASSESSMENT

Following stage 5, students spend at least 30 hours preparing for their final assessment by:

Continuing to keep their learning journal.
Ensuring their resource manual contains everything they need.
Revising all previous stages.
Students will also continue to practice but the case studies are not assessed after stage 5.

PRACTICAL ASSESSMENT

Throughout the stages the teacher will assess students on various skills and knowledge. They need to have been passed on all these before they may take the final assessment.

ONE-DAY ASSESSMENT

Approximately twelve weeks after Stage 5 there is an assessment day where you will be assessed by the tutor in conjunction with the moderator. This is a practical assessment and you will partner other students and

conduct a client session,
be asked to discuss, demonstrate and work up one of the factors you have chosen from each of the 5 courses and
you may be asked questions across the course range at the discretion of the assessing tutor.

You must also have your portfolio of work (learning journal, case studies, resource book and check sheets) available for the moderator to view.

INVITATION

We welcome new trainees to the profession. If you enjoy working with people, training to become a Health Kinesiologist could open the door to a really worthwhile future for you.

If you want to do some background reading on Health Kinesiology, the best introduction to the subject is a book called Health Kinesiology by Jane Thurnell-Read. It is the standard reference work for all qualified practitioners and very readable.

There is a full description and details of how to buy it on another page: Click here to go to the details.

Training to become a professional Health Kinesiologist does require a commitment in terms of time, effort and money. However, I believe personally that what you get out of Life is proportional to what you put into it. Certainly, whenever I talk to the practitioners listed on this web site, they invariably tell me that becoming a qualified HK Practitoner has transformed their life for the better and they feel privileged to be in a position to help other people regain their health and well-being.

I do hope that you will decide to join us. The next step is to make contact with one of the course tutors and book your first course and to clarify any queries you may have.
